The number of working holiday makers has more than doubled in the last 10 years and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship estimates that up to 180,000 visas may be granted in 2008-09, which offers many benefits for Australian industries sourcing staff.
According to Australian Education International, there were 460,000 International students in Australia on a student visa in July 2008. International students (and in some cases extended family members) are able to work 20 hours work per week during semester and unlimited hours during semester breaks.

Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417)
The majority of backpackers currently working in Australia are on working holiday visas that allow them to stay in Australia for up to 12 months and work for the same employer for up to 6 months.
Second Working Holiday Visa
Popular industries for backpackers looking at applying for the second working holiday visa include: agricultural, tree planting, harvesting, farm work, fruit picking, station work, packing sheds, mining and construction.
Effective 1 July 2008, visa holders who work in the following industries in regional Australia for 3 months are eligible to apply for a second working holiday visa which extends their stay in Australia to a maximum of 24 months.

Sponsorships & Migrations Programs
Temporary Business (Long Stay) - Standard Business Sponsorship (Subclass 457) is the most commonly used program for employers to sponsor overseas workers to work in Australia for a time period of between 3 months and 4 years. It is the responsibility of the employer to check if a person has a valid visa and is entitled to work in Australia. There are several easy options available through the Department of Immigration for employers to check on the validity of prospective workers as follows:
VEVO is a free, internet-based system that allows you to check the work entitlements of a visa holder online. The service gives you current visa information and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Visa Entitlement Verification Faxback Service provides written confirmation from the Department of Immigration of a visa holders' entitlement to work in Australia. It is a a toll-free service. To use this service you will need to complete the Authority to Obtain Details of Visa Status form and fax it to 1800 505 550. The form is available from the department's website or by calling 1800 040 070.
